He certainly is good at heart, and have a similar set of values to the heroic act to those of the captain, but I think that his selfishness gets the best of him. He truly is a cranky old man, who things that his way of seeing things is the right one and no amount of facts can change that. Taking his relation with Sam as an example: even when Sam has proved his value as hero, Swifty stills treats him as a villain. I wonder how he would interact with Dr. Rocket now days…
This isn’t a bad take. My only counterargument would be that we all have those people that just rub us the wrong way, but also that there there’s a HUGE difference between the way Swifty treats Sam and the way he treats Jerry. Within that difference lies his true intentions.
I’m really liking this chapter. It’s great to see Captain Spectacular taking on a mentorship role, (especially after letting things slide with Tom and CSII.) Since the beginning of the strip, Spectacular has been one of the most flawed characters. This proves that wisdom often comes from failure.
I’m really glad you see that! I’ve always maintained that Cap was my favorite character. It’s nice to see him get some recognition for who he really is and who he’s trying to be. Yes, he’s flawed. But, he’s growing. Changing. I think that’s admirable.
Compare this guy to the guy we met in Chapter 1. Totally different person almost. It’s up to you to decide if he arrived where is now organically or not, but I will say, as a writer, I certainly tried.
