Today’s strip kind of unlocks a big piece of the puzzle and I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys make of it. I know some of you have objections to the way these flashbacks are playing out, and that’s okay. Chapter’s not over yet.
A flashback heavy strip like today deserves a few annotations. This is mostly stuff we’ve seen before, just in a new context.
Panel 1: We’ve seen this fire from the outside in Jerry’s Origin Story, but it was never explained who started it. I know when Jerry’s origin story first ran, a lot of people assumed he started it. Now you know better.
Panel 2: The Th3rd World Comics guys first showed up in a flashback to the origin of Captain Spectacular and Dr. Rocket. By the time we saw them again in Jerry’s origin, they were wearing furs. Now you have some idea as to what happened in between.
Panel 3: This is a new scene, but to see young Jerry’s lovestruck reaction to first meeting Spy Gal look no further than right here.
There you go! See you in the comments!

I think the problem I have with this strip is that it attempts to mitigate the responsibility Jerry has for his own actions. Did they make which choices he would make more likely? Yes.
But he remains the person that made them.
That’s a great point and one that will be addressed head on by more than one character before this chapter is over.
As an early Jerry fan, I really like this development! He’s still crazy, but the evil he does stems from a messed up morality that has been imposed upon him, not that Jerry is evil by nature (as we already know, he doesn’t view himself as evil, although of course, very few people do). I’m not trying to say he isn’t evil now, but it feels sort of nice to know, he COULD have been good :/
I think if nothing else this chapter is going to spark the debate anew. How much agency does Jerry really have? It’s a good question to ask.
But yes… there is a reality in which Jerry never did all the awful things we’ve seen him do.
Wow. Jerry is and has been seriously messed up. And it looks like Go… er the comic creator is far from innocent. I wonder if the same person could effect a positive change…
“Go…?”
As in… Gozer?
Well if this is true, then all of Jerry’s life is one big mess thanks to his alternate reality daughter. I have to say that is pretty messed up and could cause a lot of problems if ANYONE were to find out the truth. š
Hoo-boy. You are so right.
“Gina” sounds a little too much like “Gene” to be a coincidence. Gene is the true evil behind it all.
Mystery. Solved.
