UPDATE 2:30pm PST: Whoops. Sorry about that folks. I have never, ever let it go so long without writing up something short to go beneath a strip. I spoke in church yesterday, and between that and the video I’ve spent weeks putting together for Violent Violet’s 3rd Birthday and my wife being sick and my cousin’s daughter staying with us the past few days, it’s been a perfect storm of busy-ness.
Despite my silence, I’m incredibly excited by this strip as it both reveals some important facts about New California and hints at great complications to come. I’ve read some of your comments already and many of you seem excited by what the last panel suggests. Someone even used the word “Ship.” Oh dear.
On Wednesday we catch up with another character One Year Later. If you think he has a new look and his name rhymes with Larry, you’re right!
Ok the San Andrean Coastline. As a person born and raised in san Diego, this means only one thing.. That an attack made against california involved the destabalization of the san andreas fault line, causing a massive earthquake that caused parts of california to break off. And the new islands prove it! … You know, id laugh if you have the island of san diego taken over by Dinosaurs.. Jurrasic Park makes full circle!
Darn it. Should have thought of that.
still chuckling at this comment, 2 years later!
Is Sam wearing a Blackwater (AKA Xe Services, AKA Academi) logo sweater?
Since I have no idea what that is and this is Marc’s design, I turn this one over to him.
The design on Sam’s chest is a simple bear claw, similarities to Blackwater is purely unintentional. I felt with Sam’s “face turn” as it’s called in wrestling circles, he would want to ditch the communist symbolism, but still keep an outfit that evokes his proud Russian heritage. I chose to model Brock wanted a more militaristic look, so I took inspiration from Sean Connery’s Alcatraz break in look from ‘The Rock’ while mixing in some ‘bear’ symbolism.
Oh, Res, meant the bear claw! I couldn’t figure out what he was referring to. (Probably because I neglected to Google.) Thanks, Marc.
Thanks for the info. I didn’t think that Sam would be a buddy of one of the more blatantly sinister companies ever (they were probably the inspiration for the blatantly evil Blackwood Company in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. )
So… Romantic tension between Soviet Sam & Spy Gal, eh?
A bit. Maaaaaaaaaybe…
You’re hinting something at the end of this strip aren’t you ?
Something or someone important is near the San Andrfault line isn’t there ? š
There is something hinted at the end of this strip.
A man of action clearly captures the heart of a woman of action.
Oh poor Jerry. You’re only good at opening doors to other people’s opportunities.

Just when I think the art and scripting couldn’t get any better, you two throw this at us. Strong and subtle wins the day.
Thanks, Spike! We’re gonna have a lot of fun playing this one out.
SHIP! SHIP!
The faces that launched a thousand shippers…
Haha. This did make me laugh out loud.
Well, that was definitely unexpected.
Yes! Always love that.
Hate to be too literal, but the San Andreas fault isn’t sliding west to the sea, it us sliding NNW towards Alaska. So, if anything catastrophic happened to the fault it would just release all the portions that haven’t moved in 60 to 330 years and would shift several feet. The resulting earthquakes in the southern end would destroy most of Southern California and Lower California cities from Tijuana to L.A., and there would probably be no San Francisco, since the fault (and collateral faults) runs through it.
But the idea that California would slide into the ocean is mythology.
I have no doubt you’re completely correct. I’m not geologist, admittedly. But I am a superpowologist and trust me, California was split along the fault line and San Francisco remains.
My universe! My magic!
I said I thought Sam had a crush on Spy Gal, and the feeling seems to be mutual. She seems to go for burly, balding and bearded in her old age. I particularly enjoy the little smile as Michelle watches the two of them.
You did indeed call this one–which was impressive because while I was writing to it, this is the first actual, intended hint. Nice work, Andrew. I can always count on you to pay close attention.
Saw this on Tumblr, pretty sure that’s Dictator Tot leading Hulk by the hand.

Indeed it is! Charles is a friend and I commissioned that from him myself. I based Dictator Tot on my daughter and her favorite toy from the ages of 1-2 was a giant Hulk doll. That illustration now hangs in her room.
