COMMENTARY

This strip angered a lot of people. No one—and I mean NO ONE—felt that Captain Spectacular would just stand by and watch Spy Gal get knocked out like that. Honestly, I couldn’t understand that reaction based on what we’d just seen in his flashback. Not only is the Captain flawed, but Tangerine is his friend.

Still, the outrage did prompt me to address the Captain’s disconnect in further chapters, something I was planning on doing anyway, but now I had something to really hinge it on.

The “superhero code” that Spy Gal refers to is something you see referenced by super powerful guys like Superman and Green Lantern.  Oddly enough, Batman too.  There’s this idea that killing is unacceptable, no matter the circumstances.  I’ve always thought this was an odd philosophy and not at all supported by any traditional definition of what a hero is. If there’s a time to fight, then there’s a time to kill. Doesn’t necessarily mean I agree with Tangerine, but what we have in this strip are the two extremes of the argument. Traditionally, in superhero comic books, there’s very little room for discussion of what lies between them.
