I WROTE THE WORDS “THE END”

For those of you keeping score at home, it was 23 months ago that I announced I’d be cutting the regular SuperFogeys strip back to once a week. This was the move that inspired the creation of SuperFogeys Origins.

The reason for the schedule change was to allow me time to work on a memoir about my dad and growing up. Sounds boring, I know, but the title (as it stands right now) is Raised by a Dead Man: A Coming-of-Age Story between Two Shootings, so as you can imagine it’s not exactly your typical kids’ stuff. On Tuesday, I wrote the words “The End” and finished the last chapter and I finally have a complete book.

Or, at least, a draft of it.

This is a huge milestone for me. I’ve never written a book before and I honestly had no reason to think I could do such a thing, and yet I felt compelled. And here I am, now, with a roughly 280 page manuscript.

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not announcing a return to twice-a-week for the Valhalla stuff. The first chapter still needs serious work and then I need to go through the whole thing one more time to make sure it’s up to snuff and to read it all together for the first time and see just what the crud I have done. Then I intend to have it published, and that’s a whole ‘nother thing.

In other words, the easy part is now over. Here comes the hard part. Wish me luck.
