THE ANNOTATED SUPERFOGEYS 259
I doubt you can tell, but I just got new Micron pens and paper yesterday. I can always tell because the lines I draw are just a little too thick and a little too lacking in energy when I’m using new pens. Takes a little while for the flow to settle in just right. Would probably be easier if I drew bigger, but oh well.
If you haven’t read Star Maiden’s origin yet, may I suggest you do so now? As you can see, it’s going to have great bearing on the next few weeks!
SUPERFOGEYS TROPES?
SuperFan Scott Kinoshita pointed me towards a fascinating site yesterday, TV Tropes.org. It’s a site that examines, by category and by work, the nuts and bolts of fiction writing, or, in other words, the tropes. Here’s the logline:
Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members’ minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means “stereotyped and trite.” In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.
Now, the site doesn’t just deal with television. As such, Scott felt it was high time the SuperFogeys were represented. Check it out!
Now, this is a fan-driven project. This isn’t something I can or should get involved in. I’m too close to it. As such, Scott is looking for some help to identify the SF tropes and really turn this story I’m telling inside-out. You in?
SF SITE REDESIGN UPDATE
We’re on the third draft of the redesign right now and things are coming along great. There’s always a tug of war between what looks cool and what functions best as a web page, and that’s the biggest reason you go through multiple drafts when the early design is so, so great. I showed it to my wife the other night and she was a bit taken aback. It’s RADICALLY different from the current site.
But overall? She liked it a lot.
There will be several new things (mostly small because the SF site is pretty great already) in this new site, one of which will be a new Fan Art section. I’ve always encouraged fan art and posted it when I’ve gotten it, but now there will finally be a place to archive the submissions. I can’t wait to get them all into one place.
If you would like to do some fan art (and I may steal from David Reddick and institute something like his “Fan Art Fridays”) and have it in the new gallery, please send it along to me at bwhheasley (at) gmail (dot) com.
NEXT WEEK:
On Tuesday, we continue our fast forward journey through Soviet Sam’s life and then put on the brakes. You’re finally gonna get an idea of where this story is really headed.
Then, on Thursday, Star Maiden continues her tale as she makes it back home and is greeted by someone most unexpected.
[…] not THAT crazy. This flashback is a bit of a sequel to both Star Maiden’s origin and the flashback that showed her trip home. If you’re curious, I think they’re pretty good […]
