Oh, Space Pig. We rarely hear from you, but when we do, you’ve always got interesting things to say.
Anyone notice his new look? I’ve been wanting to get Space Pig in those goggles forever, and now there’s finally an excuse to do it!
See you on Monday!
This contrast you’ve highlighted between Percy and Swifty is incredible. How much does one’s past determine his future? Do your ancestors influence your legacy? If so, how?
Yes, the people who have gone before you do have an influence on you. But like all things, what you do with it is up to you. It’s true that Percy’s father is Captain Spectacular. That’s a very good thing in this moment. But what happens when Percy realizes that his father isn’t as incredible as he seems? What happens when he sees that his dad is just a guy who lived his life the way any decent man would? He certainly didn’t fall prey to *most* of the temptations that come with his gifts, but he usually didn’t go above and beyond with those gifts either. Captain Spectacular may be living in an extraordinary situation, but at the end of the day, he’s an ordinary man. I’m interested to know how Percy will handle himself on the day that his father is knocked off of the pedestal in Percy’s mind. It’s something that every son goes through.
You outline an interesting path for Percy. Is disillusionment about to rear its ugly head, or will he continue to look up to his father? Cap is a very human, flawed character. You’re right about that. Is that enough to damn him?
P.S. Love the mirrored expression on both of their faces in the last panel. Pure gold.
Marc is the best.
I agree with Matt here, the greatest thing of this strip is the resemblance between Percy and Cap looking at each other. Even they have the same curly hair thing. Great work Mark!
And also, yes, Pig has always been kind of always in the shadows as support, from the time he was introduced as Cap side kick to his partnership with Sam. Wonder if he has ever studied psychology…
If you go back to Space Pig’s origin…his background is in theology, actually. Not saying he couldn’t have studied psychology, but that’s what we know about him.
While we’re on the subject of superhero lineage…whatever happened to Spy Gal’s daughters? Sylvia and Natasha? I know Sylvia had a family, but Natasha was a member of the Unicef Upstarts. Why isn’t she involved?
I think it’s safe to say Sylvia and Natasha are still out there, but I honestly don’t know that we’re going to get to them again before the story is all over with. Maybe!
