Raise of hands who wants to see Marc draw the twisted version of Jerry all day.
That’s what I thought. Seriously, Marc has got one heckuva dark side or something because that shot of Jerry cackling is just horrendously terrific. You guys have been great about really digging into Jerry lately and figuring out what makes him tick, but I think the other side of this that’s completely fascinating to me is what Spy Gal must be going through. She’s a particular and unique kind of person with a varied life experience. How does someone like Spy Gal handle someone like Jerry–someone who supposedly loves her? You’re about to find out.
Spy Gal references two events in today’s strip you might want to revisit. It was Jerry under the guise of the Third Man who manipulated events to bring Tangerine to Valhalla, and then this happened. It was revealed later that this is what really happened. A little bit later, Tom, the son of Captain Spectacular was seemingly killed, but at the end of the chapter it was revealed that he was merely kidnapped, then, much later on,Ā Spy Gal and everyone else found out. There, you’re all caught up now.
See you on Wednesday for a little bit of Jerry history and Marc drawing in a style never before seen in SuperFogeys!
i think just about all of us forgot about his hand in hermans death…(i know i did)
PART of me…(i TEEEEEEEEEEEENY TIIIIIIIINY) small part can rally behind jerry (he’s still evil in my eyes) ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL of this all of what he has done was to win spy gal’s heart. In his twisted logic (from what we’ve gathered so far) was done so he could have her.
I love this sick twisted look of jerry’s…BUT something tells me he’s still got an ace up his sleeve. You don’t plan that meticulously and not have some kind of contingency plan…
I guess we shall get another piece of the puzzle on wednesday!!!
I think you’re right about people forgetting about Jerry’s part in Herman’s death. To be fair, that happened during a period when things were still pretty hidden. It’s only when you read it back through that you realize Tangerine was the gun and Jerry had his finger on the trigger.
So no mention of Swifty at all… I mean the guy tried to warn everyone of this. š
Still, I do wonder of the true origins of Jerry’s plan. I can’t wait to read more of it.
To be fair, you know a lot about Jerry’s plan. A lot. Do you know everything?
No.
The “I did it all for you” speach. Who called it?
Well, it had to happen, right? It’s what happens after that I can’t wait for you guys to see.
We find out he had yet another persona – the fourth man.
Great! He can be his own barbershop quartet! š
For some reason, I heard Jerry in John C. Reilly’s voice today.
Kind of love that.
And now the famous… “It’s not my fault” line. You have now just reached common super villain status buddy!
Now lets see if the heroes suffer from chronic sympathy syndrome in which they will feel sorry and blame them self for what just happened leaving the villain enough time to betray them in some way and escape.
That does happen a lot, doesn’t it?
“I did all of those horrible, evil, twisted things, and lied my AZZ off to you and everyone around me, because I *WUV* you…”
The only reason Jerry isn’t a wife-beater is that she’d kick his rear up around his ears so far, it’d look like a halo. Abusive sicko.
Yikes. Harsh.
It will be interesting to find out just how active Jerry was in Herman’s death. Did he realize at some point he wasn’t the real Dr Rocket and set Tangerine up to be sent to Valhalla in the first place to take him out? Or did he think he was the real Dr Rocket and just trying to tie up loose ends, after his staged shooting? If anyone was likely to figure it out it would be Dr Rocket. The Third Man did provide the tip off as to where to find Dictator Tot and no matter how drunk he was I don’t imagine hallucinating the pint-sized villain was a giant monster was alcohol induced. On the other hand he could have done it because Herman’s “reformed Dr Rocket” wouldn’t be useful in his future plans. He may have set the whole thing up to cover his tracks and lure the real Dr Rocket out of hiding.
Agh, home sick from work and just reread the old strips. Forgot, Jerry did set Herman up to be killed to force the real Dr Rocket out of hiding.
No worries! Sorry you’re not feeling too good, Andrew. Get better soon.
I’m going through my own life currently and I think that in one sense I can relate to Spy Gal, as her rational side and emotional side will battle about this issue (rationally you can explain that it’s not her fault yet emotions, those pesky emotions make another statement). Spy Gal is one of the most rational characters in this comic yet this is a big hit for her emotions. And because I’m having that battle of rational and emotional side going now, I pick this side of the comic more easily than some others maybe.
And I think that the situation may bring to her mind how her husband was killed because of her. And make this whole situation more harder to Spy Gal in an emotional sense.
Si Civa, I’m sorry for whatever it is you’re going through. I think you break down the conflict within Spy Gal beautifully and you’re going to see her grapple with those very issues. The question really is, which will win out? The rational or the emotional?
It’s not just the eyes(though they certainly make him look evil in that panel), its the teeth! All those teeth! I dunno, its something about superheroes/villains and teeth that make them look more or less good/evil.
How often, besides the pearly whites, do you see the teeth(while still inside the mouth of course) of heroes? Not very often. When you do, its usually a sign they just let the animal inside of them out to “play” for awhile. How often do you see the teeth of villains? Quite a bit.
You’re so right. Why are teeth so evil looking? I mean, if they’re pointed, sure, but those are just normal teeth. Never thought about it before, but you’re right.
Oh I love this comic so much. The art the story, the in depth characters that pull you in and make you root or despise them. Truly a great work. I would never have guessed it would have turned out this way in the beginning and I have truly enjoyed the ride.
But you know who will be most bummed about how Jerry has turned out….Mega Matt. Jerry was his role model for how a normal guy can be a superhero. Ganna be a big let down to him when he comes back.
Sam, your comments always make us smile.
As for Mega Matt… seriously? SERIOUSLY? How long has it even been since that guy showed up? You guys are relentless.
Wasn’t it just a little while ago? One of the strips when the site was down?
Was it? WAS IT!?!?!?
Classic blame shifting. Jerry, you’re delusional. Spy Gal, don’t you buy that for a second.
Could be blame shifting… but he’s essentially correct, no?
Well, at least he’s stopped denying he’s a villain.
Maybe…
What makes this work (besides Marc’s magnificent art) is the line “That’s hurtful” in the first panel. We’ve seen that kind of talk from Jerry before:
Panel 2 of this:

Panel 1 of this:

I suspect he got that way of talking from his Aunt Harriet.
Good digging, Michael! I had completely forgotten those lines.
Have to disagree with everyone else, but I think this is weak. Jerry really shouldn’t be cackling like that, it doesn’t really seem consistent with his character at all, even if he’s losing it.
Always appreciate the honesty and crits, Scott. All I can say is that I thought long and hard about the psychology of this confrontation when I set about writing it and, for me, Jerry’s reaction here makes sense.
