And that’s a wrap for Captain Spectacular and Star Maiden’s journey in the Inevitable Dimension. Now you know how they fell in love and how Cap could break Spy Gal’s heart so terribly when they returned to Earth all those years ago. Big, HUGE thanks to artist Julio Molina-Muscara and colorist MAD Conk for helping me tell this fun, twisty story.
And now, I can finally announce the next, most anticipated SuperFogeys Origins story yet…
Coming next week, it’s SUPERFOGEYS BABIES with art by Denver Brubaker and color by Jeff Couturier! This one is gonna be EPIC and will run for several months. I’ve been warned away from this story by many of you and I myself have had my reservations, but rest assured this isn’t some out-of-continuity, Muppet Babies-like lark. SF Babies IS canon. Believe it.
Speaking of SuperFogeys Origins… I’m looking for more artists to help me tell some more stories. The SF Origins scripts can be demanding and require a certain level of skill and storytelling ability, but I do my best to tailor the tale to the artist and make sure we both have a lot of fun. If you think you might have what it takes and wanna give it a shot, contact me at bwhheasley (at) gmail (dot) com!
I’m sorry what? That… really doesn’t make any sense to me.
Yeah, things got a little Morrisonian at the end there, didn’t I? (i.e. some big ideas at play, but tossed of with intimations and the barest of explanation) I admit this story could have used an extra page.
The basic idea is that, in this dimension, each person is haunted by their a physical manifestation of their own, personal destiny. Basically, you can talk and socialize and play and work with your destiny. The old wizard they trapped on the last page learned from his destiny that he’d be constantly frustrated by Cap and Star. So, the old wizard met privately with Cap and Star’s destinies and cut them a deal: in exchange for getting rid of Cap and Star through a portal the wizard would create, the wizard would grant them independent sentience. If you’re a physical manifestation of someone’s destiny, then you don’t really have a choice about who you are and what you do.
So, the destinies kicked Cap and Star through the portal, changing themselves to the new destinies they’d just created in the process. Then, with only moments to spare before they’d be lost forever since Cap and Star were now outside of the Inevitable Dimension, the wizard reneged on the deal and so they disappeared.
That’s admittedly super complicated, but I think it’s all in there if you read carefully. I wrote this story in 2007. I think I’ve done a lot better since.
… but if they lacked independent sentience then they’d never be able to cut the deal in the first place. Also I don’t think Star Maiden’s destiny would be that stupid. Cap’s yes, hers no.
