Oh, Star Maiden. What happened? I find the different interpretations of who exactly Dark Maiden is in relation to Star Maiden really fascinating. There seems to be some disagreement, which surprises me.
But that? That’s a real death.

Really? There’s been disagreement about who Dark Maiden is?
Wowzers! Skeleton and all
Not who she so much as the nature of her transformation. See JE Draft’s comment below.
For some reason the second panel makes me want to see a cross between SuperFogeys and Indiana Jones. (I guess some people did get fried in a couple of movies.)
The makers of Indiana Jones were sadistic in that way. Always finding the WORST way to kill people.
Tyler: more Mars Attacks to me š wow even Zurida thought it was over kill… somethings not right there. never noticed the alien had leg braces. is that just because he is old or the previous run in with Dr. rocket?
i guess its probably from 316 when Dr. Rocket drops Pilatius from the platform. HA should do my research i guess.
Good sleuthing!
My contract said I’d have to take a bullet for the president – not be vaporized.
A sound point, I think. At least with a bullet you have a chance of surviving.
Well at least the Secret Service guy died doing what he was supposed to, protecting the President. Poor President Superknocker better enjoy those donuts, it’s gonna be the last sweet part of his day.
True story.
I think any jog/donut run would just turn into a straight up donut run haha
I know it would for me. Who feels like running after donuts?
And the SS guys decide to give a punchline instead of immediately opening fire when they see their buddy get smoked? Is this the first superpowered menace to the White House they’ve ever dealt with?
And we just squashed the frelling White House. At this point, nothing is overkill.
And no, I think everyone here already figured out from reading the back story what a bent, burnt, soulless creature SM is.
Yours is an interesting and emphatic take on Star. Anyone concur?
I’m not going to agree with JE Draft there — Star Maiden’s entire character up until returning to her planet was heroic with no signs of darkness. Then something was done to her, and from a writing standpoint I disagree with a complete 180, I can see her taking revenge on a people who basically turned their back on her and gave her no respect. I’m waiting to see how the arc with her goes though; I take very strong issue with any and all kinds of mind control, brain washing, or other co-ops for changing a character’s personality.
Well, I guess I’m just looking at her formative years and seeing the complete lack of any normal human contact, the betrayal, the hatred and how completely easy it was for her to turn into a raging psycho without any benefit of mind control.
@JE Draft: I hear you, but even in her childhood years she was a defender. On Earth, she was loved and appreciated if her fan club was any indication and the feeling was mutual. The problem was she was depicted as going from hero to villain in one operation. Now there’s a considerable time-skip between her killing her former mentor (which was understandable considering he teamed up with his former arch-enemy to take over) and returning to Earth. Her people have been depicted as being… well, a race of jerks. If their own super-hero teams up with his arch nemesis, we have some serious differences in social values.
The part that really doesn’t make sense is how she is immediately depicted as being the leader of the invasion force. Villains leaders have enormous egos as a general rule (it’s a requirement because villains with low self-esteem never get leader jobs) and they usually don’t work well together. Now the operation was supposed to have:
1. Unleashed her full power
2. Made her obedient to their every whim.
Instead, tampering with her brain turned out to be a huge mistake — she spared her father who later betrayed her. Who then scrambled her brain. Again.
Here’s the problem, from a writing perspective. Scrambled-Brain Star Maiden isn’t just a fun character, but it’s the only thing that differentiates her. Regular-Brain Star Maiden isn’t very interesting, neither is stereotypical villain Dark Maiden.
And this is the main problem. Star Maiden is boring in comparison to Scrambled Maiden. Dark Maiden is just as boring. As a villain, she lacks Dr. Rocket’s special kind of bunny-loving charm. I’m really disappointed that the invasion seems to be centring around her because she’s not a strong enough character to carry it. I’m indifferent to her, and that’s why she fails.
Scott, I don’t disagree with a single thing you’ve said.
